Senior PHP Software Engineer

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Senior PHP Software Engineer with a strong focus on performance and scalability for platform governance and limits enforcement. In this role, you will be instrumental in designing, building, and deploying solutions to proactively manage and enforce platform limits, ensuring the long-term stability and fair use of resources.

The role requires working a shift from 1-2 PM to 10 PM (Kyiv, Ukraine) and participation in on-call rotations.

Responsibilities

• Lead the technical design and implementation of a more resilient indexing pipeline
• Develop high-quality, scalable PHP code for the search platform and its components
• Provide technical guidance and best practice recommendations to team members
• Take ownership of complex challenges related to data synchronization and system load
• Define and implement best practices for Elasticsearch mappings, queries, and monitoring
• Serve as a key member of the team's on-call rotation
• Articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, both technical and non-technical
• Proactively seek out challenges and solutions with a high degree of drive and initiative
• Continuously learn new technologies and adapt to evolving challenges with a strong growth mindset
• Apply understanding of the ecommerce industry to address the unique performance demands of online retail

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software development experience
• Expertise in PHP plus a strongly typed backend language such as Java, Scala, or GoLang
• Experience addressing performance issues with SQL queries, indexes, and schemas
• Understanding of search concepts with hands-on experience in Elasticsearch, including query optimization and index management
• Proven experience with distributed messaging tools like RabbitMQ or Kafka
• A track record of leading the design and delivery of complex, resilient systems
• English proficiency at B2 level or higher

Nice to have

• Familiarity with distributed systems and event-driven architectures
• Experience in scalability and performance testing, with an understanding of load generation, monitoring, and analysis
• Experience building and maintaining automation for testing, data collection, and reporting
• Expertise with load testing tools, specifically K6 and beyond (e.g. JMeter, BlazeMeter, etc.)
