Cyber Systems Engineer
Company Overview
Metrea delivers effects-as-a-service to national security partners across five domains and more than a dozen mission areas. These include airborne ISR, electronic warfare, secure communications, aerial refueling, special air missions, aerial firefighting, and advanced simulation. We own the whole stack: designing, building, and operating turnkey capabilities that give our partners decisive, asymmetric advantage against rapidly evolving threats.
Our operating model is built around three interlocking pillars. The Support Groups provide a global shared-service – spanning people, finance, platform, operations, legal, and engagement. This frees up our Core Groups, who develop and own mission capabilities end-to-end, to focus entirely on delivery. The Market Groups apply a regional lens, ensuring that our agile and adaptable capabilities remain aligned to the wicked problems that matter most to our partners across the Americas, EMEA, and Asia-Pacific.
At the heart of our model is a simple but powerful idea: be a true partner with skin in the game. Our partners need effects, not just equipment. By owning the full stack – from the lab to the field – we are able to drive a continuous cycle of innovation that keeps our partners ahead. It's a fast-moving, intellectually demanding environment where talented people are given real responsibility, work on problems that matter, and contribute to an enterprise that is growing quickly and deliberately.
Headquartered in Washington, DC, with facilities across the United States, the United Kingdom, as well as Continental Europe and Asia-Pacific.

Position Summary
We're hiring a software engineer to build the systems behind our edge sensing and secure-communications products. You'll spend most of your time writing production code, designing services and data pipelines, researching new technologies, and making distributed software run reliably on constrained Linux devices in the real world. This is a builder's role. You'll own technical problems end to end—from rough requirements to shipped, tested, deployable code—and work closely with engineers who live at the intersection of software, networking, and wireless. If you like turning hard, loosely-defined problems into clean systems that actually run in the field, you'll fit here.
What You'll Do
- Write production Rust for real-time data ingestion, processing, and device control
- Design and build modular services and APIs that span edge devices and backend infrastructure
- Build data pipelines that feed analysis and automation
- Integrate your software with network stacks, wireless tooling, and external data sources
- Implement automation frameworks—rule-based workflows, triggers, and orchestration
- Deploy and tune software on resource-constrained Linux systems, and debug system-level, networking, and performance issues when they surface
- Prototype quickly and iterate as requirements evolve
- Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and field teams to make the whole system work as one
What You Bring
- Proficiency in Rust, Python, and Bash
- Experience building backend, systems, or distributed software
- Strong networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, sockets, packet-level behavior)
- Real fluency in Linux—services, processes, debugging, and performance tuning
- Ability to work independently and deliver from loosely defined requirements
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
- Familiarity with wireless technologies (Wi-Fi, BLE, cellular, SDR)
- Experience with edge or embedded systems (e.g., ARM, Jetson, Raspberry Pi)
- Working knowledge of C# and/or JavaScript
- Exposure to security-focused engineering, red teaming, or penetration testing
Benefits
- Comprehensive medical plan options
- HSA/FSA accounts
- Dental and vision coverage
- 6% employer 401(k) match
- Fully paid parental leave for all new parents
- Generous PTO
- Life and disability insurance
- Long-term and Short-term disability coverage
- AD&D Coverage
- Pet Insurance
- Employee Assistance Program
- Subsided gym membership / plans through Wellhub
Work Authorization / Security Clearance
- Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- This position requires eligibility to obtain a Top Secret / TS/SCI clearance. Candidates will be subject to a background investigation in accordance with federal requirements. Employment is contingent on meeting all clearance and adjudication requirements.

Our Firmware
At Metrea, our single core value is Rooted in Humility, and our four cornerstone attributes are Entrepreneurial, Systematic, Discerning, and Over-Deliver. These form what we call our Teammate Firmware. Just like technical firmware connects software and hardware, our Firmware is the constant interface between our mission and our people. It defines how we show up, how we work together, and how we solve complex problems.
Our team Firmware creates a web-like, hyper-collaborative, dynamically hierarchical way of working that helps us adapt quickly, communicate openly, and distribute decision-making to where expertise actually lives. It enables groups to self-organize around hard problems, shift fluidly as priorities evolve, and operate with the trust, curiosity, and discipline required in a complex mission space. This foundation allows us to deliver elegant, effective solutions and uphold our purpose: protecting our precious inheritance.
About the Company
Metrea is the originator and leading provider of effects-as-a-service to national security partners across multiple domains and over a dozen mission areas. We seek out complex national security challenges and proactively develop elegant solutions combining cutting-edge commercial technology and business models. We were founded, designed, and are governed by principles, incentives and frameworks that allow us and drive us to act long before a contract is in place. Once engaged, our success is measured by how effective, efficient, and adaptable our solutions are in delivering real-world outcomes. Our deliberate exposure to the success of our solutions demands full accountability. In every mission area we enter into, we build vertically integrated, full-stacks of capability. We architect solutions and their supporting programs, design and engineer the critical technologies they require, and take full ownership of testing, operating, and delivering their final effects in the field. Delivering our solutions as-a-service provides true agility. Our customers can turn them on and off at a moment's notice, scaling them up and down as their requirements change. With full-stack ownership, we drive continuous improvement: turning field insights into rapid innovations, continuously integrating them into our operations. Our lean-forward commitment doesn’t end at prototyping - we deliver and operate our solutions as a service throughout their entire lifecycle. Ours is an organization deliberately configured to mitigate, share, and unburden our partners of risk in every mission we take on.
