Metrology Systems Engineer

Salary: £51,000 - £59,000 depending on experience + Private Health + Death in Service (x3 your salary)
Location: Abingdon, Oxfordshire
Working pattern: On site during probation, with hybrid flexibility where possible after that

Your recruitment journey:

1st stage: (45 minute) Remote meeting to evaluate your experience and technical ability

2nd stage: (2.5 hours) Face to face onsite evaluating technical, presentation and communication skills along with your ways of working and your opportunity to gt to know more about us

Ready to work on measurement technology where the numbers really have to mean something?

Infinitesima builds advanced metrology instruments that help enable the next generation of semiconductor devices. Our high-throughput AFM platform, Metron, is used in production fab environments where accuracy, repeatability and confidence in the data are non-negotiable. This role owns height accuracy and height repeatability system functions for Metron.

We are looking for a Metrology Systems Engineer to take ownership of metrology performance across a complex, multi-disciplinary instrument. This is not a narrow test role. You will be translating customer and stakeholder needs into measurable specifications, building performance budgets, proving the system delivers, and helping engineering teams make the right technical trade-offs.

You will work closely with system function architects and development teams across optics, mechanics, electronics, control systems and software. The role gives real technical influence across the wider engineering team, particularly around specification, budgeting, validation, data analysis and performance improvement.

What you will be doing

  • Owning system-level metrology performance, with a focus on height accuracy and height repeatability.
  • Turning customer and stakeholder requirements into clear, measurable metrology specifications.
  • Defining and managing performance budgets across the instrument and its subsystems.
  • Developing test plans to validate metrology performance against requirements.
  • Defining reference samples, calibration approaches and measurement protocols.
  • Analysing instrument data to identify real error sources, including noise, drift, probe effects, stage behaviour and environmental impact.
  • Supporting integration testing and troubleshooting across hardware, software and control systems.
  • Providing technical guidance to development teams and helping improve systems engineering best practice.

What we are looking for

You will probably come from a background in complex instrumentation, precision measurement, scientific equipment, semiconductor tools, AFM, nano-characterisation or advanced metrology.

You will need experience with:

  • Atomic Force Microscopy or closely related nano-characterisation techniques.
  • Precision measurement, metrology performance, accuracy, repeatability, uncertainty, error budgeting and requirements definition.
  • Complex, high-precision or multi-disciplinary instrumentation.
  • Instrument testing, verification and validation.
  • Data analysis using tools such as Python, MATLAB or Excel.
  • Working across disciplines such as mechanics, electronics, optics, software, control systems or motion systems.

It would be useful if you also have experience with Scanning Electron Microscopy, Focused Ion Beam, profilometry, measurement uncertainty methods, gauge R&R, measurement systems analysis, C# or Python-based test automation.

Why this role is worth a look

This is a proper ownership role for someone who wants to influence how advanced metrology performs in the real world. You will be close to the physics, close to the data, and close to the engineering decisions that shape the product.

Infinitesima is a growing team of 100+ people based in Abingdon, backed by global financial and industry investors including Applied Ventures. You will also receive 25 days’ annual leave, private healthcare, pension contributions and an EMI share scheme.
