About the Role
As a Senior Full-Stack Engineer at Throne, you'll own features end-to-end across our API (Node.js), web dashboard (React/Next.js), and mobile app (React Native) - from an ambiguous product idea through a measured technical design to production. This is a high-autonomy role on a small team: you'll make architecture decisions, write the specs the team builds from, and partner directly with product to turn priorities into well-scoped work. We are looking for an experienced engineer who thrives in a fast-moving startup environment and is comfortable with day-to-day uncertainty.
This role is eligible to work remotely within the United States. Minimal domestic travel should be expected.
The base salary range for this position is $150,000 - $200,000. Actual compensation will depend on a candidate's applicable experience, skills, and geographic location. This role is also eligible for a comprehensive benefits package, including equity.
What you'll work on
- A cloud-connected IoT fleet: real-time device state and cloud-to-device commands
- over AWS IoT Core / MQTT.
- Real-time operational surfaces for the team running the fleet across markets.
- Data-driven optimizations and automations as we scale from flagship market to many.

Responsibilities
- Own features end to end: design, scope, prototype, build, test, ship, and refactor across API, web, and mobile.
- Translate ambiguous product requirements into clear technical scope - data models, API contracts, and implementation options with their trade-offs.
- Drive architecture decisions for new and existing services to support our constantly increasing scale, and back them with evidence (measured performance, capacity, failure modes).
- Lead feature and story refinement; research and analyze the impact of new capabilities before they are built.
- Partner proactively with product to clarify priorities, resolve ambiguity, and turn them into deliverable tasks. Raise the engineering bar through code review and shared standards.
- Use AI-assisted development tooling (Claude Code) with good judgment to increase your leverage in scoping, code review, implementation, and ramping quickly on unfamiliar systems.
Minimum Requirements
- 7+ years of commercial full-stack software development experience.
- 3+ years of production experience with React Native, including cross-platform (iOS + Android) apps shipped and maintained through app-store releases.
- Excellent engineering judgment and a solution-driven way of thinking.
- Strong proficiency with JavaScript / TypeScript.
- Strong proficiency with Node.js and Express.
- Production experience with React and NextJS
- Production experience with both SQL and NoSQL data stores.
- Experience with real-time systems (WebSockets, event-driven architectures).
- Hands-on experience operating on AWS (ECS or EKS, Lambda, Cognito, SQS, CloudWatch).
- Comfort owning ambiguous problems and communicating technical decisions clearly in writing.
Nice to Have
- Experience with embedded / IoT systems (ex. MQTT, device fleets).
- Serverless and micro-services architecture.
- Infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation).
- Data-intensive or optimization/algorithmic work; big-data solutions and data warehousing.

About the Company
Throne Labs was founded in 2020 to solve a problem everyone experiences: scrambling to find a clean and accessible public restroom when you need it. Co-founder and CEO Fletcher Wilson knew this problem well, often admitting, “My GI system is my worst system.” When his experience turned into curiosity about public restroom access in the U.S., he found that he wasn’t alone in this problem. After hearing stories from everyone from delivery drivers to runners to parents with kids, it became clear that this issue is as universal as it is overlooked.
And so, Throne was born.
Armed with backgrounds in engineering, entrepreneurship, and social impact, our team of co-founders set out to create a public restroom solution that could be available within hours, not years—and was actually pleasant to use. After several iterations and years of testing, we launched our first permanent Throne in March 2023 in Washington, D.C.’s fastest growing neighborhood: Capitol Riverfront.
