Senior Android Developer

Hybrid – Knoxville, TN

Are you ready to shape the mobile experiences of tens of millions of Americans every month? Join TEGNA’s Development team, where we build cutting-edge websites, mobile apps, OTT apps, and custom editorial tools. Despite being part of a large, publicly traded company, our team operates with the agility and excitement of a startup. We’re a fun-loving group of professionals who thrive on innovation and getting things done.

We are seeking a Senior Android Developer to help lead the evolution of our native Android news platform, which powers branded apps for 50+ TEGNA stations from a single shared codebase. In this role, you’ll build new features, mentor teammates, tackle our toughest performance and architecture challenges, and help set the technical direction for the app. If you love modern Android development and working in a collaborative environment, this is the perfect opportunity for you.

This is a hybrid role based in Knoxville, TN, with a mix of in-office and remote work.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and ship features for our native Android app using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, aligned with the product roadmap and our engineering standards.
  • Own significant areas of the codebase and serve as a key resource for investigating and resolving complex product issues.
  • Write efficient, reusable, and reliable code within a Clean Architecture, multi-module structure.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks—especially around video playback, memory usage, and UI recomposition—and drive solutions.
  • Mentor other developers through code review, pairing, and technical guidance.
  • Collaborate with developers, designers, and product/business managers to translate requirements into well-architected solutions.
  • Help maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines and release processes across our multi-station builds.
  • Rapidly learn new technologies and adapt to changing business and customer needs.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, including 3+ years building native Android applications with Kotlin.
  • Hands-on experience with Jetpack Compose and modern Android UI development.
  • Solid understanding of app architecture patterns (MVVM, Clean Architecture) and separation of concerns.
  • Experience with Kotlin Coroutines and Flow for asynchronous and reactive programming.
  • Experience with dependency injection (Hilt/Dagger).
  • Experience consuming RESTful APIs (Retrofit/OkHttp) and working with JSON.
  • Experience with local persistence (Room or similar).
  • Proficient with Git and code versioning workflows.
  • Understanding of design principles behind scalable, maintainable applications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a collaborative, team-first attitude.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with ExoPlayer or other media/video playback and streaming.
  • Experience with multi-flavor/multi-module Gradle builds.
  • Familiarity with feature flagging (e.g., LaunchDarkly) and A/B testing.
  • Experience integrating analytics, attribution, and push notification SDKs.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices (Azure DevOps a plus).
  • Experience with automated testing (unit and UI) and static analysis tools like ktlint/Detekt.
  • OTT/TV or news/media app experience.
