Staff Engineer - Platform

The Staff Platform Engineer in Squad Argon is a senior technical leader with a unique dual focus - Platform Services (Identity, Eventing, Features, Comms, Core monolith) primarily requiring Java backend development and Platform Experience encompassing Developer Experience, DevOps and SRE. You will operate with a high degree of autonomy to identify and solve our most critical technical challenges across platform services and infrastructure, often in areas that are loosely defined or span multiple domains. You will provide the technical vision and architectural guardrails for platform-wide concerns, and your work will have organisation-wide impact — from identity and messaging infrastructure through to developer experience and reliability.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and evolution of platform services and infrastructure with organisation-wide impact
• Split ownership across developing Java based Platform Services and Developer Experience / DevOps / SRE Platform Experiences.
• Own and evolve Identity & IAM infrastructure, including Keycloak configuration, integration patterns and security posture
• Design and operate messaging infrastructure using Artemis (and/or Google Pub/Sub, Kafka), ensuring reliability and scalability
• Build and maintain common libraries that bridge application services and platform services across the engineering org
• Own the connectors to GCP infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, developer portals and developer experience tooling
• Define and enforce quality gating, error budgeting and lockout policies across the platform
• Define the long-term technical roadmap and architectural vision for platform domains and articulate ROI to engineering leaders
• Drive engineering excellence by identifying root problems and promoting best practices across the organisation
• Mentor senior engineers, providing deep technical guidance and fostering growth into future technical leaders
• Conduct technical interviews and assess technical expertise during the recruitment process
• Represent engineering in cross-functional discussions
• Drive innovation by prototyping and championing new technologies, including strategic use of LLMs and AI-driven development practices

• Recognised as a go-to technical expert and thought leader by peers and leadership
• Contributions to open-source projects
• Experience in a regulated industry, such as healthcare
• Master's degree in computer science or equivalent field

Requirements

• Expert-level proficiency in Java and related frameworks and libraries
• Deep knowledge of middleware services & frameworks (relational databases, NoSQL, messaging systems) and nuanced understanding of their internals
• Hands-on experience with Identity & IAM systems — Keycloak experience strongly preferred
• Proven experience with messaging infrastructure — Artemis, Google Pub/Sub, Kafka or equivalent
• Experience building common libraries or platform SDKs with broad engineering adoption
• Strong GCP (or equivalent cloud) infrastructure experience — networking, compute, storage, security
• Proficiency with CI/CD pipelines, developer portals, developer experience tooling and quality gating practices
• Experience with SRE disciplines — error budgeting, SLOs/SLIs, incident response and reliability engineering
• Demonstrated experience designing, building, and operating complex distributed systems at scale
• Mastery of architectural patterns, domain-driven design, and data modeling for complex systems
• Proven ability to influence and lead large, complex technical projects without formal authority
• Exceptional ability to navigate and resolve technical ambiguity in a fast-paced environment
• Critical and data-driven mindset in problem-solving and solution design
• Active participation in technical guilds or communities of practice
• Proficiency with cloud-native architectures, containerisation (Docker/Kubernetes), GitOps, and infrastructure-as-code principles
