Senior Data Engineer
✨ AI Summary
Diverge Health, a healthcare company improving access and outcomes for Medicaid patients, is hiring a Senior Data Engineer for a fully remote role. The position requires 10+ years of data engineering experience, healthcare claims/membership data expertise, and deep hands-on skills in Dagster, Python, and Snowflake, including Snowflake administration and Git governance. The role owns the data pipeline architecture and includes mentoring. Salary range is $180,000-$190,000, with hiring unavailable in Alaska and Hawaii.
At Diverge Health we are passionate about improving health access and outcomes for those most in need. We partner with primary care providers to improve the engagement and management of their Medicaid patients, offering independent practices with specialized resources and clinical programs to close gaps in care. Our teams work to address medical, social and behavioral patient needs, lowering healthcare costs and improving patient lives. Guided by our core values of humility, continuous learning and feeling the weight, our team is on a mission to strengthen communities from within, unlocking people's ability to live their healthiest lives.
We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join our growing team! You will own the health, reliability, and architectural direction of the data pipeline that our care teams, provider partners, and analytics functions rely on every day. We are looking for someone with deep hands-on expertise across Dagster, Python, and Snowflake, who can operate independently while communicating clearly with both technical and non-technical partners.
What you'll do
As the Senior Data Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in building and maintaining the pipelines and warehouse structures that the rest of the business relies on to consume and act on data. Built on Dagster for orchestration and Snowflake for our data warehouse, our pipeline depends on you to make sound architectural decisions across our database, schema, and environment structure as our systems scale, with primary responsibility for the payer data flowing into Diverge Health.
Key areas you'll add value
- Own the ongoing upkeep and maintenance of our data pipeline, focusing primarily on the health and timeliness of payer data flowing into the company.
- Ingest and standardize new member rosters and claims data as they arrive from payers, building the models to interpret each payer's structure and combine it with existing payer data into a consistent view for analysts and stakeholders.
- Make architectural decisions regarding our database, schema design, and Snowflake environment structure, balancing performance, cost, and scalability.
- Administer Snowflake as infrastructure, including provisioning, account and user creation, and access and role management.
- Stand up and support Snowflake as a service for teams across the business, including our application development team.
- Oversee our Git environment, including repository and permissions management, setup, and governance.
- Develop and maintain data pipelines from file receipt through processing, ensuring reliability, graceful failure handling, and appropriate monitoring and alerting.
- Participate in the team's circulating support rotation, providing day-to-day response to issues as they arise during business hours.
- Support iterative, definitional work with stakeholders, such as refining how patients are scored for outreach, by building and running proposed definitions against the data and presenting the resulting impact to inform the decision.
- Lead a team or project independently, providing technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers as we grow.
- Partner with teams across the business, including Finance and Payer Account Management, to understand data needs, align on shared definitions, and translate technical concepts and tradeoffs into clear, actionable terms for non-technical partners.
- Continually evaluate areas for process improvement, implementing solutions that streamline development, and improve pipeline performance.
What you’ll bring
- 10+ years of professional data engineering experience, with a track record of independently owning production data pipelines.
- Healthcare industry experience, including hands-on work with claims data, membership data, and healthcare data transformation.
- Demonstrated hands-on expertise with Dagster as a primary orchestration tool.
- Expert-level proficiency in Python.
- Extensive hands-on experience with Snowflake, including schema design, performance optimization, and environment structure decisions.
- Snowflake administration experience, including provisioning, account and user creation, access and role management, and supporting Snowflake as a service for other teams.
- Strong SQL skills and broad data warehousing fundamentals beyond any single platform.
- Git administration experience, including repository and permissions management, setup, and governance.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor other engineers, serving as a technical resource for the team.
- Comfort operating where definitions do not yet exist, with the judgment to establish them in partnership with the business rather than waiting for an existing answer.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Proven ability to balance competing priorities and follow work through to completion in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Preferred experience
- Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience, in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field.
- Salesforce development experience.
- Proficiency with VS Code or comparable development tooling.
- Experience incorporating AI coding assistants, such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Copilot, into a professional development workflow.
Who we’re looking for
- You are equally empathetic and objective, humble and highly conscientious, the kind of teammate who inspires and motivates others.
- You are comfortable with uncertainty, self-motivated, and self-directed, able to operate effectively in a high-growth, rapidly evolving environment.
- You are a problem solver, able to think critically and strategically while staying hands on, proactively identifying and resolving risks to execution and delivery.
- You connect authentically with people from all walks of life, bringing empathy and humility to every relationship.
- A strong representative of Diverge Health's mission, vision, and values in every interaction and every deliverable.
