Forward Deployed Engineer

Overview

Permute is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer to work directly with customers to design, implement, and deploy technical solutions to complex financial workflows. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, product, and customer implementation and is ideal for someone who enjoys turning ambiguous business problems into working systems.

We care as much about how you solve problems and work with customers as we do about your background. The ideal candidate combines strong technical fundamentals with commercial judgment, someone who can understand a customer's financial workflow, translate it into technical requirements, and work hands-on to deliver a solution.

This role is particularly well suited to someone with experience in technical implementation, solutions engineering, or technology consulting who wants to operate closer to the product and build.

Responsibilities

• Work directly with customers to understand complex financial and operational workflows and translate them into technical solutions

• Own customer implementations end-to-end, from requirements gathering and solution design through integration, deployment, and iteration

• Build and configure integrations, data pipelines, APIs, and application workflows within customer environments

• Partner closely with engineering and product teams to solve customer-specific technical challenges and influence the product roadmap

• Diagnose and resolve issues across customer data, integrations, infrastructure, and application logic

• Prototype solutions quickly and determine when customer requirements should become reusable product capabilities

• Develop a deep understanding of customer workflows across financial data, analysis, reporting, and decision-making

• Communicate effectively with stakeholders ranging from engineers and data teams to finance professionals and executives

• Operate effectively in ambiguous, rapidly evolving startup environments

Required Qualifications

• Strong technical foundation with the ability to write code, work with APIs and data, and reason about complex systems

• Experience in technical implementation, solutions engineering, technology consulting, software engineering, or a similar customer-facing technical role

• Ability to translate business requirements into technical architecture and implementation plans

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a bias toward ownership and execution

• Comfortable working directly with customers and communicating technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences

• Working knowledge of finance, financial markets, accounting, or financial analysis

Preferred Background

• Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field

• Experience working with financial institutions, investment firms, fintech companies, or finance teams

• Experience with:

  • Customer-facing technical implementations

  • APIs, data integrations, and data pipelines

  • Python, SQL, or similar languages

  • Cloud infrastructure and production applications

  • Financial data and analytical workflows

• Background in technology consulting, implementation engineering, solutions architecture, or forward deployed engineering

• Ability to move comfortably between writing code, understanding financial workflows, and working directly with customers
