About the Role, Mission or Department Overview

The Reflections team at The New York Times is looking for a Full-Stack Software Engineer to help build personalized experiences that make The Times feel uniquely yours. You'll work as part of a diverse, team that includes native mobile engineers, web and backend engineers, QA engineers, product managers, designers, and data experts.

The Reflections team focuses on personalizing the Times experience, helping readers effortlessly discover and engage with the journalism they value most. Our goal is to strengthen and deepen each reader's relationship with The Times through thoughtful, relevant, and engaging experiences.

We're looking for a product-minded engineer who is passionate about solving user problems and building high-quality, world-class experiences across our platforms. You'll contribute across the full stack, collaborate with partners across the organization, and help shape products that reach millions of readers.

Our primary technologies include React, JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, GraphQL, Go, PostgreSQL, and AWS.

You will report to the Engineering Manager on the Reflections team.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead full-stack feature development from design to production, building high-quality, scalable systems that serve both readers and editors.

  • Collaborate with design, product, web/backend and native mobile engineers to refine requirements and technical discussions.

  • Contribute ideas that shape the direction of our products and in taking on work that is meaningful to you.

  • Develop full-stack solutions while building expertise across the entire technology stack.

  • Provide production support by participating in on-call rotations for the systems and tools we build.

  • Contribute to iteration on internal team processes and norms.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to the the Engineering Manager.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2 years of professional experience building and delivering user-facing features in a collaborative environment.

  • 2 years of experience demonstrating ownership of user-facing features (or clearly defined portions of larger features), taking them from implementation through launch while partnering with Product, Design, and Engineering.

  • 2years of experience, navigating, and unblocking technical challenges.

  • 2years of experience partnering with Product, Design, and Engineering to solve user problems and deliver high-quality product experiences.

  • 2 years of professional experience with modern JavaScript technologies, including React, Node.js, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.

  • 2+ years of experience building backend services and working with technologies such as Go, Node.js/Express, GraphQL, and cloud platforms (GCP or AWS).

  • 2+ years of experience working with data persistence technologies, including SQL or databases.

  • 2+ years of experience troubleshooting, debugging, and resolving issues in production environments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using AI coding tools, especially for agentic workflows

  • Experience with DevOps practices, including CI/CD techniques and tooling (e.g. Drone, Jenkins), automated testing and deployments, observability and monitoring.

  • Familiarity with containers and container orchestration systems like Kubernetes, Docker.

  • Understanding of caching and content delivery.

This role is hybrid, located at our New York City headquarters, and typically requires coming into the office two days per week.

Additional Compensation and Benefits:

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.

For roles outside of the U.S., information on benefits will be provided during the interview process.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$110,000$130,000 USD
