This opportunity provides the chance to collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams supporting utility-scale renewable energy projects in the solar and wind sectors, while contributing to the development of critical civil infrastructure that addresses both current and future challenges. Civil Engineering Technicians support the planning, design, and implementation of site development activities, including grading and drainage, erosion control, roadways, fencing, and underground utilities for large-scale utility projects.

The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Staff Civil Engineering Technician plays a vital role in the delivery of high-quality engineering deliverables for these complex infrastructure projects, working alongside a collaborative and experienced team of professionals. Under general supervision, this role performs technical civil engineering design tasks requiring advanced knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices. The position provides technical guidance to engineering professionals and technicians to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance with design standards across project deliverables. Key responsibilities include the preparation and modification of site plans, grading designs, and utility layouts. Work is performed using advanced, industry-standard design tools such as Autodesk Civil 3D, PVcase, and PVFarm.

Job Summary

  • Functions in a project engineering technician capacity.
  • Under general direction, supports engineering and design teams by developing and modifying technical deliverables.
  • Applies foundational engineering principles and established design practices to create moderately complex design concepts and solutions.
  • Utilizes digital tools and design software (e.g., CAD, BIM, 3D modeling) to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables.
  • Provides technical guidance and may offer direction to other engineering professionals and technicians to ensure quality and consistency across project outputs.

Skills

Required:

  • Experience with Civil 3D grading.
  • Autodesk Civil 3D experience.

Preferred but not required:

  • Solar industry experience.
  • PVcase and PV Farm software experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Applies knowledge of applicable standards, systems, document control procedures, departmental guidelines, codes, and project requirements.
  • May review project requirements and accurately determine the correct format and content of required deliverables.
  • Supports quality assurance processes for deliverables and contributes to continuous improvement and change management efforts.
  • Reviews design inputs to ensure consistency and assists in ensuring deliverables comply with applicable project codes and standards.
  • Applies basic engineering principles and established design practices in developing moderately complex design concepts and deliverables.
  • Exercises judgment and makes decisions regarding deliverables and interpretation of design inputs.
  • Handles difficult technical assignments within an area of expertise and provides technical guidance to other professionals.
  • Performs design calculations, detailed material quantity takeoffs, estimates, and related documentation.
  • May review the deliverables of other team members.
  • May define work assignments and maintain project schedules.
  • Coordinates with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information necessary for design development.
  • May support field activities.
  • Focuses on the needs of internal clients while maintaining an understanding of external client interests and project drivers.
  • Proactively seeks and shares knowledge of the latest technologies, tools, and processes.

Education

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Diploma or certificate required.
  • Associate Degree in Drafting, Engineering Design, or a related technology preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Typically, a minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
