✨ AI Summary

Upway, a circular economy mobility platform, is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager in Paris to lead a 6-person Ops & Demand team. The tech stack includes TypeScript, NestJS, React, Shopify, and PostgreSQL. Candidates require 8+ years of software engineering experience with 3+ years managing engineers, plus a track record in e-commerce or logistics. Compensation includes a market-level salary and competitive stock options, with regular travel to Europe.

We are looking for a senior Engineering Manager to lead our Ops & Demand engineering team, the engineers who build the tools our operations teams run on (reconditioning, logistics, inventory, customer service) and the Shopify online store our customers buy from. The team has 6 engineers and two Product Managers, one for Ops and one for Demand, and will grow as the business does.

The engineering organization is about 20 engineers across two impact teams (Ops & Demand, B2B Supply), a Platform team and two Staff Engineers. You report to the VP Engineering and work closely with the CPO, the Product Managers and the operations and commercial leaders of each region.

Why Upway?

Because we’re not just building tech - we’re redefining how mobility works in the circular economy. You’ll join an ambitious, fast-moving team backed by world-class investors, with the opportunity to architect a platform that touches millions of people and shapes the future of sustainable transportation.

We are looking for a manager who understands the business first, who holds a high bar on quality, and who can set the pace of the team according to what is at stake. This role is sized for someone who can grow into leading several managers as the organization scales.
  • Prioritize building great products. Make sure each team member navigates prioritization against business stakes: They decide with the PMs what gets built, what gets deferred, and when a tactical request takes precedence over roadmap work.
  • Ensure each team member takes velocity, quality and risk of what the team ships as their responsibility, including stability of the online store and the back-office tools used daily by the operations teams.
  • Stay close to the business: spend time with the reconditioning, logistics, customer service and local teams to understand their bottlenecks and turn them into the right engineering solutions.
  • Lead and grow the team as the business justifies it: hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance and career development of each engineer.
  • Partner with the Platform team and the Staff Engineers on architecture, technical standards and cross-team projects.
  • Contribute to the engineering leadership team: organization design, engineering strategy, budget and hiring plan for 2027 and beyond.
  • Keep technical depth to review designs, unblock engineers and challenge solutions, without being the main individual contributor.

  • 8+ years in software engineering, of which 3+ years managing engineers, ideally a team of 6 to 10 engineers covering several product areas.
  • A track record of delivering business results through a team, in a marketplace, e-commerce, logistics or operations-heavy environment.
  • Comfort working with non-technical stakeholders: you can sit with an operations lead, understand the problem behind the request and come back with options and trade-offs.
  • Experience with cycle-based planning (for example Shape Up) or a similar method, and with balancing several product areas and stakeholders on one roadmap.
  • Strong hiring skills: sourcing, interviewing, closing and onboarding engineers.
  • Enough hands-on experience with a modern backend language and relational data modeling to review system designs, challenge technical choices, and spot quality risks before they ship. Experience with TypeScript/Node.js or Shopify is a plus.
  • Judgment on speed versus quality: you know when a quick fix is right and when the stakes call for more care.
  • A bias for action, quick learning and long-term thinking.
  • Comfort with a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Based in Paris or willing to relocate.
French speaking is not a requirement and non-french speakers are encouraged to apply to this position.
  • Location: Paris (in person)

  • Compensation: Market-level salary, highly competitive stock options. We aim for fair pay and sizable equity upside, aligning your success with the company’s.

  • Travel: Regular travel to Germany, Belgium, and other UpCenters

  • Language: English by default - we’re an international team. French is not required.

  • Our Stack: TypeScript (NestJS + React) · Shopify for the online store · An internal back-office for operations · Python for data and automation · PostgreSQL · GCP infrastructure · Metabase for dashboards · Basecamp for project planning and tactical requests.
